I’m Elissa…
a vocalist and voice teacher with two decades of teaching and performing experience. I started voice lessons in middle school, about the same time I started hanging around in the backseat of my brother’s ‘84 Civic listening to Jawbox and Drive Like Jehu.
My musical life has been equal parts singer/academic and heavy band hobbyist. After years of juggling these interests separately, they finally merged in Alvarez Voice, my studio where I help you learn to sing, yell, scream, or combine these vocal techniques into a strong, sustainable instrument.
Whether you need support with your existing artistic approach, want a strategy for maintaining your vocal health and stamina on tour, or seek guidance in getting started, I’m here to help.
My teaching…
fuses fundamentals of vocal pedagogy, evidence-based voice science, neurology, and exploratory embodiment techniques to help you find, support, and explore your voice. Vocalizing can feel like a bit of a trust fall: I strive to provide a space where you can freely cultivate your physical, sensorial, and mental awareness as a vocalist, with compassion and without judgment. Sessions with me are a one-on-one hour over Zoom or in my home studio, tailored to your unique goals and needs. Screamer who wants to sing? Singer who dreams of playing with harsh vocals? Entirely new to vocalizing? I got you.
I’ve taught all levels, from kids to adult beginners and professionals, in genres ranging from classical to hardcore. I received my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and my Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University. I’m certified in Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method Level I and studied Vocal Kinesthetics with Kimberly Moller.
